DALLAS (KDAF) — It’s World Chocolate Day, which is a global excuse to indulge — and in the U.S., there’s no shortage of chocolate devotion.
From trick-or-treating to movie nights and office snack drawers, candy bars have carved a place in American culture. In celebration of this sweet holiday, the research team at McLuck determined which candy bars are most loved in each state. Using Google search data from the past year, the study analyzed the top-searched candy bars across all 50 states.
Milky Way: 8 states
Topping the candy charts is Milky Way, taking first place in eight states including California, Georgia, and Alabama. Its velvety nougat center, layered with caramel and enrobed in milk chocolate, is a classic comfort treat. The candy bar’s old-school appeal may explain its popularity in the South and coastal states: it’s a no-frills, satisfying sweet that’s stood the test of time. California’s choice might seem surprising given the state’s health-conscious reputation, but even West Coasters need a nostalgic treat sometimes.
Hershey’s: 7 states, including Texas
Tied for second is the iconic Hershey’s bar, topping the list in seven states like Texas, Maine, and Nevada. Simple, nostalgic, and versatile, whether eaten straight, melted into s’mores, or paired with peanut butter, Hershey’s remains a timeless American staple. Its widespread popularity in both rural states like Montana and high-population hubs like Texas speaks to its universal appeal.
Twix: 7 states
Also claiming seven states is Twix, beloved for its satisfying crunch and caramel combination. States such as Illinois, Alaska, and Vermont chose this biscuit-based candy bar, which offers the perfect balance of texture and sweetness. Twix’s dual-bar format might explain its popularity. It’s ideal for sharing (or saving one for later if you’re feeling disciplined).
Kit Kat: 5 states
In five states, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming, Kit Kat came out on top. With its crispy wafers and break-apart design, Kit Kat is often viewed as the “on-the-go” candy bar. It’s a favorite for work breaks, student study sessions, or just casual snacking. The Northeast’s affinity for Kit Kat may reflect the region’s fast-paced lifestyle and need for quick pick-me-ups.
Snickers: 5 states
Also topping the list in five states is the always-satisfying Snickers, which combines peanuts, nougat, caramel, and chocolate in a single bar. States like Florida and Minnesota voted for the protein-packed bar, possibly drawn to its reputation as the “candy bar that can hold you over.” Its hefty texture and bold flavor could be why it’s a hit in the Midwest and South alike.
Reese’s: 5 states
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, technically not a “bar,” but too beloved to ignore, ranked first in Arizona, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, and New Mexico. The creamy peanut butter and milk chocolate combo is practically an American institution. Its popularity in diverse states may be due to the universal love for salty-sweet combos and the growing obsession with peanut butter everything.
Skittles: 3 states
Not a chocolate bar, but Skittles managed to grab top honors in Missouri, Colorado, and West Virginia. The fruity candy might be benefiting from those looking for a change of pace from rich chocolate. Skittles also have strong brand appeal and a vibrant pop culture presence that helps boost their visibility.
Bounty: 3 states
The coconut-filled Bounty bar, often considered more of a UK favorite, managed to claim the top spot in Oregon, Louisiana, and Wisconsin. Its popularity in these states could be tied to a taste for tropical or unusual flavors. Wisconsin’s pick might raise some eyebrows, but hey, cheese isn’t the only thing they’re into.
Butterfinger: 2 states
Crunchy and bold, Butterfinger is the go-to in Arkansas and South Carolina. Its flaky peanut butter center wrapped in a crisp shell makes it one of the more unique options on the list. These Southern states may appreciate its big flavor and satisfying texture.
3 Musketeers: 2 states
3 Musketeers, the airy, whipped nougat bar, wins in North Carolina and Washington. Its light, fluffy consistency offers a contrast to heavier bars like Snickers, and perhaps that’s exactly why it appeals to these states: chocolatey, but not too dense.
Almond Joy: 2 states
In New York and New Jersey, Almond Joy takes the crown. This tropical-flavored treat, with coconut, whole almonds, and dark chocolate, isn’t for everyone, but it has a fiercely loyal fan base. Its top ranking in two major East Coast states suggests it’s a nostalgic choice with lasting appeal.
Kinder Bueno: 1 state
Finally, New Hampshire stood out for picking Kinder Bueno as its top candy bar. This European treat, known for its creamy hazelnut filling and crispy shell, has slowly made its way into American hearts. Its high-end packaging and sophisticated flavor profile may appeal to New Englanders seeking something a little more refined.
