There are fresh calls to simplify the planning system for building new homes, to get people in the door faster and help solve the housing crisis. The Housing Industry Association says outdated and complex requirments add to the cost of housing by $165 million each year, which excludes the extra rent and mortgage payments being paid while home owners wait for the keys. It also says the red tape like drawn out DA approvals are pushing out construction by up to 6 months. These figures are specific to New South Wales. But Housing Industry Association NSW executive director Brad Armitage says everywhere you look across the regions the problems are similar. He says attitudes need to be more flexible when it comes to the type of housing required to meet demand. The HIA is calling for moves to reduce DA fees and duplication, speed up processing time and ensure council building standards aren’t more onerous than the national standards set by the NCC.
