A cast member of Verdi’s opera Il Trovatore unfurled a Palestinian flag onstage at the Royal Opera House, in London, England, undeterred by someone backstage who attempted to grab it from him.
The video, which went viral on social media, drew both praise and condemnation for the artist’s actions.
“The display of the flag was an unauthorized action by the artist,” the opera company said in a statement. “It was not approved by the Royal Ballet and Opera and is a wholly inappropriate act.”
The opera company declined to comment when asked whether the performer would face any disciplinary action.
