Australian Quantum Firm Expands to Japan with Tokyo Government Support

(Tokyo) – Quantum Brilliance, a pioneering Australian quantum computing firm, has officially expanded into Japan after being selected for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s foreign business subsidy programme. The move marks another strategic step in the company’s international growth, with the new office located in Toranomon Hills, Tokyo.

The Sydney based company, which was founded in 2019 and emerged from research at the Australian National University’s Research School of Physics, is the first Australian firm to secure a place in the Tokyo subsidy programme. The initiative, introduced in June 2023, is part of Japan’s broader strategy to attract both talent and investment from abroad into its capital.

Quantum Brilliance is setting up operations with the support of Kiraboshi Bank and assistance from Austrade’s Tokyo office. The company has established a Japanese subsidiary and is now actively hiring local talent to build out its new Tokyo team. Hideaki Yoshimura, who has worked with Quantum Brilliance for the past year, has relocated to oversee the local arm as Country Director.

The Tokyo subsidy programme offers financial reimbursement for foreign companies that open offices in the city. Quantum Brilliance will receive half of its actual business establishment expenses, capped at 10 million yen, which is approximately 52,000 pounds or 107,000 Australian dollars. The firm will also be eligible to apply for this subsidy each financial year, provided it maintains operations in Tokyo for at least two years following the approval of the grant.

Chief Executive Mark Luo welcomed the support from Japanese partners and authorities. “We see Japan as a key location for building a diamond based quantum technology value chain,” he said. “We are excited to have the support of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and are grateful to Austrade’s Tokyo Office for introducing us to this grant.”

This expansion marks Quantum Brilliance’s fourth office outside Australia, joining sites in the United Kingdom, Germany and Singapore. It is also the company’s first new international base since late 2023. The move into Japan reflects the growing demand for quantum solutions and Tokyo’s ambitions to position itself as a regional hub for cutting edge technologies.

Quantum Brilliance is known for its work in building mobile, room temperature quantum computers using synthetic diamond technology. Unlike many other systems that require supercooling and significant energy inputs, the company’s devices aim to be compact and scalable for a variety of practical and industrial uses.

With this Tokyo expansion, Quantum Brilliance continues to assert itself as one of the most promising companies in the global quantum race, positioning Australia as a serious contributor to the next frontier in computing innovation.
