As many as about 50 Russian soldiers remain surrounded by Ukrainian defence units in Kupiansk city in northeastern Kharkiv region, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Joint Forces grouping, lieutenant Colonel Viktor Trehubov, told local media on February 4. Trehubov said the encircled Russian troops are located just north of the city centre, near the hospital, adding that the trapped Russian forces are suffering steady losses of several personnel each day as a result of ongoing attacks and drone strikes. Earlier, on 2 February, Trehubov said during a national news broadcast that Russian troops who had entered Kupiansk in small infantry groups were effectively facing certain defeat. He also stressed that the overall situation for Ukrainian defence forces on the North Slobozhanshchyna front, particularly around Kupiansk, remains stable and favourable. Meanwhile, the General Staff of Ukrainian Armed forces said on Wednesday that Russia launched five attacks in Kupiansk sector during the day, with Ukrainian forces repelling assaults near Kurylivka, Petropavlivka, and Novoosynove. It should be noted that Ukrainian forces have restored control over significant parts of Kupiansk city and strengthened their positions, pushing back Russian advances and clearing many areas that had earlier been under enemy influence. Ukraine has gained roughly 3.8 km² of territory in Kupiansk, and maps from military analysts show improved positions inside the city, even though the frontline remains active. In December last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskkiy stated that Kupiansk has been almost completely cleared of Russian invaders. Last week, Ukraine’s 151st separate reconnaissance battalion reported repelling a Russian attack in Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi area of Kupiansk in an operation in which several Russian troops were captured and a civilian was evacuated.
