Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted Friday a video of himself addressing troops fighting in and around Kupiansk.
"I thank every warrior! I am proud of you," he said, marking Ground Forces Day.
According to Associated Press Zelenskyy said Ukrainian soldiers were "achieving results" in Kupiansk, an important rail junction in the northeastern Kharkiv region.
"I thank every unit, everyone who is fighting here, everyone who is destroying the occupier," Zelenskyy said as loud explosions could be heard in the background.
Ukrainian forces said on Friday they had recaptured several settlements and neighborhoods near Kupiansk, following a months-long operation aimed at halting and reversing Russian advances.
In October, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Russian forces had surrounded Kupiansk, a claim the Ukrainians denied.
Open-source mapping project DeepState, widely used by Ukrainian military and analysts, suggests that Russian forces may have lost territory north of Kupiansk that they had spent months capturing since early summer.
"Today, it is critically important to achieve results on the battlefield so that Ukraine can achieve results in diplomacy," Zelenskyy said.
The video was released after Zelenskyy said Thursday that negotiators are wrestling with the question of territorial possession in U.S.-led peace talks on ending the war, with discussion focused on the future of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region.
