U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham says Putin should call Iran’s leader Khamenei to find out what happens on day 51 if Trump’s conditions on Ukraine aren’t met. He made the statement on social media platform X.
According to Senator Graham, NATO’s announcement of plans to purchase U.S. weapons for Ukraine was “welcome news.”
“Equally important was his statement that if the fighting had not ended in 50 days, he would impose up to 100% tariffs on countries buying cheap Russian oil propping up Putin’s war machine – hitting Putin where it hurts the most,” the senator wrote.
He also said that if he were a country buying cheap Russian oil and supporting Putin’s war machine, he would “take President Trump at his word.”
“If Putin and others are wondering what happens on day 51, I would suggest they call the Ayatollah,” Graham added. Earlier, Donald Trump announced that he would impose secondary tariffs on Russia, which could reach 100% if a peace agreement with Ukraine is not reached within 50 days. Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev called U.S. President Donald Trump’s 50-day deadline for a peace deal with Ukraine a “decorative ultimatum” that Moscow didn’t even notice.
The supply of new air defense systems to Ukraine also creates problems for further shelling of Ukrainian territory by Russian invaders. And now the Western media emphasize that the United States may allow Ukraine to strike deep into Russia with ATACMS missiles, which are already in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Thus, numerous military and energy facilities in Russia may soon be set ablaze, which, of course, will create additional problems for the Russian economy, already exhausted by sanctions and war.
Of course, one could argue that this economy has survived the most serious sanctions pressure from the West, and now Putin, in alliance with the People’s Republic of China, can confidently look to the military future. But the promise of a 100% tariff for countries that continue to buy oil from Russia does create certain problems for the Russian energy complex.
Russia remains a state whose budget is primarily linked to energy supplies. And any problems with such supplies reduce the capabilities of the Russian budget and Putin’s plans for a long-term war with Ukraine.
