Russian dictator Vladimir Putin visited an exhibition dedicated to the aggression against Ukraine. There, he was shown an interesting exhibit: a section of a pipe through which Russian troops attempted to stealthily infiltrate the Ukrainian Defense Forces’ rear in the city of Sudzha in Kursk Oblast. The video featuring Putin was published on April 30 by the Russian state-run newspaper Izvestia. During the tour, the guide took Putin to a piece of pipe. Anyone can climb it and understand what it’s like to climb 15 km for six days with limited air and water at 4 degrees Celsius. It’s a truly monumental feat," he said. The dictator remained silent in response and went to look at another exhibit. It’s worth noting that these events took place in March 2025. During the offensive on Sudzha, some Russian troops attempted to break through to the rear of the Defense Forces through a pipeline from which the gas had been previously pumped out. Conditions inside were extreme. The occupiers faced a lack of oxygen, toxic fumes, and extreme cold. Many Russian soldiers died while still in the pipeline. Those who survived came under intense attack from drones and Ukrainian artillery during their exit. Those occupiers who managed to survive later died in hospitals, having developed severe lung damage. This was later openly revealed by Z-blogger Kashevarova. The number of Russian soldiers killed during these events is being concealed. Remarkably, according to military experts, the pipeline operation played no role in the battle for Sudzha. Russian troops lost lives and limbs for no apparent reason. Recall, dozens of Russian servicemen who crawled through a gas pipeline near the town of Sudzha, in Russia’s Kursk region, either suffocated, committed suicide or died of panic, according to a man thought to have participated in the operation. There was a lack of oxygen in the pipeline the servicemen were making their way through to get to Sudzha, a town then occupied by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to Garus. There were also periods where the servicemen got stuck due to there being so many personnel and so much equipment in the pipeline. Russian soldiers have increasingly used underground gas and water pipes to infiltrate Ukrainian rear lines, particularly in the Kursk and Kharkiv regions. This tactic, sometimes known as "Operation Stream" or "Crawl of Duty," involves crawling through disused pipelines to bypass surface defenses. While offering temporary stealth, these attempts often result in high casualties for Russian forces, with many units being detected and destroyed by Ukrainian forces upon exiting the pipes. On multiple occasions, such as in Sumy Oblast in April 2026, groups of roughly 29 Russian soldiers were detected and killed while attempting to use a gas pipeline. Earlier operations, notably in March 2025 and January 2024, saw Russian special forces and regular troops use pipes to get behind Ukrainian lines in Sudzha and Avdiivka.
