Sociologists have recorded an increase in Russians’ readiness to protest due to economic problems and the deteriorating political situation in the country, which is occurring simultaneously with a decline in the government’s approval ratings. According to a Levada Center poll , one in five Russians believes protests against declining living standards are likely, while 14% allow for protests with political demands. These are the highest figures since July 2024, when 21% of Russians considered protests due to declining living standards likely, while 15% allowed for political protests. Compared to the previous survey conducted in November 2025, the number of citizens who allow economic protests increased by four percentage points – from 16% to 20%. At the same time, the proportion of those who consider political protests possible has also increased: the figure rose from 11% to 14%. Sociologists also note an increase in Russians’ personal willingness to participate in protests. Specifically, the number of respondents who said they were willing to attend political rallies has increased to 12%. The rise in discontent coincided with a decline in the government’s ratings.
Media previously reported , trust and support for Putin in Russia has reached a four-year low . Support for the government, and specifically for Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, has also declined. At the same time, disapproval and distrust rates increased to 23.3% and 24.1%, respectively. Since the onset of the downward trend, approval ratings have plummeted by 7.3 percentage points overall, while trust has fallen by 6.5 percentage points. A decline in support for the government, and in particular for Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, was also recorded. This, too, is part of a longer-term trend. Meanwhile, another Kremlin-loyal social service hasn’t noted a decline in the dictator’s approval ratings. Tellingly, Vladimir Putin’s administration has recommended that the media rely on these data or avoid publishing VTsIOM results to avoid disseminating data that is too close to the truth.
Well-known Russian Z-blogger Maxim Kalashnikov is sounding the alarm about the collapse of the Russian economy. He warned that the front and the Russian government will be next to collapse. He noted that Ukraine, using drones, was able to force the Russian army into a "positional stalemate" on the front. And while the Russian Armed Forces are languishing at the front without making any progress, an economic crisis of alarming proportions is escalating in Russia. "Our economic situation is worsening every day due to the protracted war… How the hole in our budget is growing! Enemy drones are already hitting deep-seated targets and oil export infrastructure, depriving us of foreign currency earnings… Metallurgy and construction are declining… And now a new problem has emerged—our regional budgets are under attack… It’s clear where the regional deficits are growing from. They need to ensure the recruitment of people for the war, which means paying extra for the "rescue." And then there are the death and injury costs. The regions are going into debt," Kalashnikov stated. He predicts an uprising and the fall of the regime in Russia if the war is not stopped soon. "If, along with the economic crisis, we start seeing regional defaults, do you realize what kind of economic, and then social and political, bomb could explode? Where is the way out of this war? What’s the solution? Regional budgets could be devastated next. Millions of doctors, teachers, utility workers, and small regional managers will be left without salaries. Can you even imagine what that will be?" the Z-blogger stated.
