Smog from fires at the Tuapse oil depot has reached Sochi, according to ecologist Georgy Kavanosyan, who published photographs taken by local residents. He estimates that the smoke could spread to Krasnodar. Residents report that it rained in the city this morning. The precipitation likely absorbed traces of burning petroleum products—sulfur and nitrogen oxides—in the atmosphere before falling, turning them into acids when exposed to atmospheric moisture. These substances fall as acid rain. It’s in Sochi that one of Putin’s main and most beloved residences, Bocharov Ruchey, is located. It boasts 40 hectares of forested parkland, access to a private beach, and modern amenities, including swimming pools, a tennis court, and a specially equipped judo gym. He spent much of the spring and fall here, hosting world leaders. The modern office building, Bocharov Ruchey-2, is still used for official meetings. Nearby is the so-called "Putin Palace" on Cape Idokopas near Gelendzhik. This massive complex, covering 17,700 square meters, is believed to have been built specifically for the president, although the Kremlin officially denies this. Smoke from the fires had already reached Armavir and the outskirts of Stavropol. Polluted air is now being recorded in other areas of the Black Sea coast. As the fires continue, the environmental situation in the region is rapidly deteriorating. An environmentalist, who spoke to the Agency on condition of anonymity, warned that the smog is dangerous for the areas it passes over and for the health of local residents. He added that some of the oil products don’t burn completely and then fall to the ground along with the precipitation. This situation is already observed in Tuapse and may be repeated in other areas. Toxic products of incomplete combustion also dissolve in water droplets, making such precipitation hazardous to health. During combustion, nitrogen and sulfur oxides are released into the air, converting into acids in the atmosphere and then falling with precipitation. Rain was already falling in Sochi on Wednesday morning, and precipitation is also expected in Tuapse and Goryachiy Klyuch. After several days of fire at the Tuapse oil refinery, local residents are calling the current situation in the city an environmental disaster and pointing to the inaction of local authorities. The Agency reports this , citing residents’ posts on social media. Residents report oil-laden sediment and a persistent burning odor. One message addressed to Mayor Serhiy Boyko and Governor Veniamin Kondratyev mentions the potential release of harmful substances from fuel oil combustion, including sulfur and nitrogen oxides, as well as other toxic compounds. The author notes respiratory problems and health concerns. Residents also have questions about safety precautions. In particular, they discuss why schools haven’t cancelled classes or implemented distance learning in the wake of the fire. Some users are posting photos of contamination on their skin and objects. People are also interested in whether it’s safe to drink local water, how to clean yards and plots to avoid damaging the soil, and how to treat grass to prevent animals from being poisoned by fuel oil. Users are sharing tips, but there is no official clarification on this matter. Residents are criticizing Rospotrebnadzor, which remains silent about exceeding permissible concentrations of harmful substances, despite visual signs of pollution. Volunteers are also pointing to an environmental disaster in the city. Animals are being found on the streets covered in oil products, as well as showing signs of poisoning. "Almost all the animals on the street are covered in oil… It’s a disaster. Everything is in terrible condition, all showing signs of poisoning," they write. The agency notes that the Kuban emergency response headquarters limited itself to reports that firefighting efforts were ongoing, but said nothing about the smoke blanketing Tuapse and other regions.
