The environmental situation in the Russian city of Tuapse has deteriorated sharply following the repeated Ukrainian drone strikes at the port. Residents are complaining of "oil rain." Following the previous attack, the port burned for several days. As soon as the fire was extinguished, Ukraine launched another drone strike. Multiple fires and heavy smoke were reported at the Tuapse Oil Refinery, located within the port area.
Local residents are complaining of poor air quality and "oil rain." The burning oil has begun to settle as black, oily slicks, polluting everything around: buildings, trees, and cars. Local residents began to evacuate on their own. "This is a real environmental disaster! What should I do? I don’t want to be here anymore. I have to leave… People are dying. Imagine, I can’t even wash this off my hand with soap. What kind of Chernobyl is this? It’s ingrained! I’m packing my things… I look out the window – it’s absolutely bad. They say I can’t film this… That’s it! I’m leaving," a local resident complained.
A Russian woman from Tuapse burst into tears after seeing the results of Ukraine’s attack. Russian woman says the sea is already polluted with fuel oil, and now drones are constantly flying over the city , leaving people uncertain whether they will be able to survive the night. Russians complain that Putin’s war with Ukraine is already reaching Black Sea cities, while the environmental consequences of previous accidents have not disappeared.
The woman says outright that the sea is "completely f***ed up with this fuel oil," and now, on top of that, there are constant attacks from Ukraine and fear for the lives of children. Tuapse is a Russian commercial seaport on the Black Sea coast. Its cargo turnover is approximately 25 million tons per year. Russians export oil, grain, fertilizers, and other commodities through it. It primarily handles oil and petroleum products, and is home to Rosneft’s oil terminal. This is a vital facility for the Russian oil industry. The first strike of 2026 occurred on the night of April 16. This attack resulted in a massive fire at the port. The oil refinery, tanker, and other facilities were ablaze. Last night, April 20, the facility was attacked again . The Ukrainian Defense Forces have already claimed responsibility for this operation. According to social media and personnel analysis, more than a dozen fires were detected on the plant’s premises, complicating firefighting efforts. A thick plume of smoke was still visible above the plant this morning. The previous fire, which targeted the city’s port and oil terminal infrastructure, occurred on the night of April 16. The cleanup of that fire continued until April 19, resulting in a massive oil spill covering approximately 10,000 square meters of water in the Black Sea. Following Ukrainian drone attacks on the Tuapse oil terminal, the number of ships calling at the port has halved in a single day, according to Novaya Gazeta Evropa
