What did the first hours after the Chernobyl disaster look like?
Ludmila Djuly, a former junior doctor at Pripyat Hospital, was part of an ambulance crew when the incident occurred.
“Ambulances were racing in one after another. We worked without the necessary protective equipment, and very often we had to beg patients to stay in the hospital,” she told Klaudia Czerwińska, a TVP World correspondent.
Djuly admitted that “no one expected an accident of this kind,” and that the doctors were only familiar with the emergency procedures in theory. “The medical staff could not show weakness,” she added.
Not only medical workers, but also power plant guard staff remained on duty until the very end. Forty years later, Djuly says she still cannot forget those events. “Protect your children,” she appealed – referring not only to the Chernobyl disaster, but also to Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure today.
