With unauthorized Starlink terminals blocked , Russia’s personnel losses have reached their highest level since the full-scale invasion, according to the New York Post, citing US and Ukrainian intelligence officials. The publication recalled that on February 1, SpaceX blocked unauthorized Starlink terminals after they were detected on Russian drones. This reduced the intensity of Russian attacks. "Within three or four days after the halt, the Russians actually reduced their assault operations," confirmed Lieutenant Denis Yaroslavsky, commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ special reconnaissance unit. Another soldier, a unit commander in the 3rd Army Corps of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with the call sign "Jackie," said that even before Starlink was blocked, the casualty ratio in some sectors of the front reached 20 Russian soldiers for every Ukrainian. According to him, in regular units, this ratio was 5:1 or 8:1, and after Starlink access was restricted, it could rise to 13:1. According to analysts, NYP writes, any weakening of Russia’s combat capabilities could tip the balance in Ukraine’s favor. It is noted that the Starlink shutdown also impacted the Russian army’s communications systems and combat methods, affecting the most basic tools necessary for war. "I’m sure the Russians have alternative options, but it will take time to fully implement them, and that will take at least four to six months," Yaroslavsky said. For example, the publication reports that the activity of the Russian Rubicon drone unit has sharply declined since the restrictions were imposed. This unit used Starlink to increase the range of its strike drones and coordinate attacks deep behind Ukrainian lines, giving Moscow a technological advantage in key areas of the front. As the Institute for the Study of War noted, Rubicon typically publishes details of its strikes on Telegram, but this practice has ceased since the Starlink blocking, meaning SpaceX’s decision has negatively impacted the Russian unit’s strike campaign. Anatoly Khrapchinsky, the defense company’s development director, recently explained how the occupiers are currently operating in response to the Starlink blockade. According to him, "the enemy is most likely adapting and exploiting the communication limits located within Belarus to build a first line of communication along the border and then extending it into Ukraine." Institute for the Study of War says that Ukraine recaptured more than 200km² from Russia last week, taking advantage of a Starlink shutdown for Russian forces, research has revealed. It shows that the recaptured area almost matches Russian gains for the entire month of December. This is the most land retaken by Kyiv’s forces in such a short period since a successful lightning counter-offensive surged into Russian territory in June 2023. "These Ukrainian counterattacks are likely leveraging the recent block on Russian forces’ access to Starlink, which Russian military bloggers have claimed is causing communications and command and control issues on the battlefield," the ISW stated. Yuriy Fedorenko, commander of the 429th Separate Achilles Unmanned Systems Brigade, also reported that Russia is attempting to compensate for the loss of Starlink. According to him, Russia is currently deploying Wi-Fi bridges, laying fiber optic lines, and installing LTE towers to restore troop command and control. "However, Ukraine is already working on alternative communication channels to protect its troops from similar threats in the future," the military officer explained. Defense Minister Advisor Sergei "Flash" Beskrestov said the Russians are testing communications from stratospheric platforms to replace the lost Starlink networks. He cited the announcement of the start of testing a stratospheric 5G platform as part of the Barrage-1 project.
