The Russian occupiers are facing a disaster on the front lines due to the Starlink outage . Advisor to the Ukrainian Defense Minister Serhiy "Flash" Beskrestov announced this on his Telegram channel .
"The enemy isn’t even facing a problem on the front lines; they’re facing a catastrophe. All troop command and control has been disrupted. Assault operations have been halted in many areas," he emphasized.
Flash noted that, in regards to our troops, it was discovered that "those who failed to promptly submit lists for private Starlinks had problems."
Russian occupying forces are facing a catastrophe at the front due to the shutdown of Starlink, says Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine’s defense minister. According to him, the consequences for the Russian army proved far more severe than even the Russians themselves had expected. After the restrictions were introduced, Starlink connectivity began disappearing en masse along the entire front line for Russian forces — something openly acknowledged by Russian pro-war military bloggers.
“The Russians don’t just have problems at the front. It has a catastrophe. All command and control has collapsed. Assault operations have been halted in many areas,” Beskrestnov emphasizes. According to him, Starlink was a critical element of Russia’s command-and-control system, and its loss instantly deprived occupying forces of the ability to coordinate attacks, adjust artillery fire, and control drones. At the same time, clarified that some difficulties also arose for Ukrainian units, but only for those that failed to submit their terminal data in time to be included on the white list. “The processing is ongoing,” Beskrestnov adds. As reported, in late January, amid the increasingly active use of Starlink terminals in Russian attack drones, SpaceX began implementing a series of measures to cut off Russians from this satellite communications network. Subsequently, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced that Ukraine would create a "white list" of Starlink terminals. Only terminals on this list will be allowed to operate in our country. Later, Russian occupiers experienced a shutdown of Starlink across the entire front , as reported en masse by Russian war-related bloggers. Starlink-equipped drones can shrug off most electronic countermeasures. Shutting Russians out of the system can stop them from buffing up their terror weapons — assuming the process goes smoothly and SpaceX maintains commitment.
Starlink can make drones more reliable to control and much harder to jam. The Russians have been putting Starlink on their long-range Shahed series, as well as shorter-range kamikaze UAVs like the Molniya and BM-35, and reconnaissance drones. This practice dates back to at least 2024, according to Kostyantyn Kryvolap, a former aviation test engineer at the Antonov Design Bureau. “At first, it was an experiment, which wasn’t very successful at first, and they didn’t scale it up,” he said. “But mentions of Starlink have appeared towards the end of last year. And in January, they reached significant volumes.” A Ukrainian engineer with the Unmanned Systems Forces, who declined to be identified, said something similar: “My understanding is that there was a spike” in late 2025-2026. “Nobody had seen Molniya drones with Starlink, but now they’re everywhere.”
