Russian air defense systems shot down 253 Ukrainian drones overnight on Jan. 3-4, including 11 intercepted over Moscow Oblast, the Russian Defense Ministry has claimed.
Russian air defense assets shot down three drones bound for Moscow, according to the Russian ministry.
Emergency crews are working to clear debris at the crash sites, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said. No casualties or damage have been reported.
Moscow’s Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports introduced temporary flight restrictions during the attack, according to Russia’s federal aviation agency.
Passengers at three key airports in the Moscow region experienced widespread disruptions on January 4, RIA Novosti reports. Due to temporary restrictions, more than 450 flights were delayed, many of them for extended periods.
According to the agency’s calculations based on online flight information, the total number of delayed flights at Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky has reached 460. A significant number of passengers faced long waits: 142 flights were delayed by more than two hours. Another 25 flights were canceled entirely. Restrictions on aircraft arrivals and departures were in effect at Domodedovo on the evening of January 4, and at Vnukovo and Zhukovsky on the night of January 3-4.
The first working day after the New Year holidays proved to be seriously disruptive for air travelers, leading to one of the most significant disruptions at the Moscow air hub in recent memory. However, Rosaviatsia notes that Russia’s air transport system has demonstrated resilience to external interference.
On Friday, January 2, four Russian airports were closed to air traffic. Restrictions were imposed at Samara, Penza, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports. Air traffic was also closed over Ivanovo and Yaroslavl.
Ukrainian drones were also shot down over Bryansk, Oryol, Kursk, Rostov, Belgorod, Tula, Kaluga, Voronezh, Moscow and Lipetsk oblasts, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

A little later, ASTRA, citing its OSINT analyst, confirmed that the fire was indeed at a defense plant. Specifically, it was noted that eyewitness footage was filmed approximately 900 meters from the attacked facility. The public also noted that the Energia plant specializes in the production of chemical power sources.
"The plant’s products are widely used in various sectors, including the defense industry, civil aviation, maritime transport, and the energy sector… Energia also produces batteries for drones, as well as batteries for aviation and the navy," the publication states. The official authorities did not comment on the situation.
Drone strikes in other regions have had consequences. For example, in the Kursk region, one person was killed when a drone attacked the village of Novaya Nikolaevka.
"A 55-year-old man died as a result of the strike. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. No words can help us cope with this loss," regional governor Alexander Khinshtein wrote on his Telegram channel.
