Despite the danger, Russia is forced to retain some of its aircraft in Crimea due to the specific tactics used to deploy them. Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk stated this in an interview with Ukrainian Radio.
He explained this using the example of the United States, which conducts long-range flights during operations and uses a fleet of aerial tankers capable of refueling aircraft in mid-air. He explained that Russia also has such tankers, but does not use them due to the cost of such operations and the limited resources of its aircraft.
"That’s why, to reduce the time it takes to complete missions and simplify logistics, they keep their aircraft in Crimea. I might be wrong, and this is all just their overconfidence, but the fact is, they’re there, and that’s why they periodically fall into the sights of Ukrainian drones, missiles, and other weapons. Explosions are heard at airfields in Crimea or in the areas where they’re located almost every night. Either this is Russian air defenses working to repel attacks, or it’s the result of their inability to repel these very attacks," Pletenchuk noted. He also commented on the state of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. According to Pletenchuk, Russia has at least five missile-carrying ships in the region capable of carrying out missions. These include three Buyan-M-class surface ships and two Project 636 submarines, the so-called "Varshavyankas." Russia may also return two frigates to service—the damaged Essen and, likely, the damaged Admiral Makarov. "But for quite a long time now, we haven’t seen any Russian ships at sea. The FSB’s naval guard still operates in the area of the so-called ‘Crimean’ bridge, but the rest of the active-duty ships never leave anywhere. They launch missiles once or twice a month, but to do so, they need to enter Sudak Bay, which takes a matter of hours," Pletenchuk noted.
According to him, this doesn’t mean the threat from the sea to Ukraine has passed. However, it does indicate a reduction in the Black Sea Fleet’s capabilities. Pletenchuk noted that it currently serves only as a cruise missile carrier.
"They’ve effectively delegated the remaining functions of countering drones, protecting waterways, covering surface and airspace, and even, perhaps, monitoring civilian shipping, to aircraft, including unmanned aircraft. Drones can be seen in abundance. These are different types: typically, they’re reconnaissance drones, sometimes operational-tactical drones like the Orion, which are armed. But conventional aircraft—jet and propeller-driven—are also used for other missions, especially during attacks on Crimea," Pletenchuk explained. As a reminder, the Ukrainian Defense Forces previously launched a series of strikes against the Russian fleet in temporarily occupied Crimea. Specifically, on the night of April 19, GUR fighters attacked two large Russian landing ships—the Project 775 Yamal and the Project 1171 Nikolai Filchenkov.
On the night of April 28, the Special Operations Forces also struck a storage site for Iskander operational-tactical missile systems in temporarily occupied Crimea. The Defense Forces had previously repeatedly detected enemy launches from this region, the Special Operations Forces noted.
