The list of mysterious deaths among Russia’s business elite has added a new name. Sergei Loytner, formerly Yandex’s commercial director, died in an accident on the Volga River. He became at least the twentieth high-ranking executive to die under strange or tragic circumstances since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Local media reported this.

The tragedy unfolded late last week. 42-year-old Leutner, who had spent the last two years developing the international brand Yango, went fishing with well-known local developer Sergei Nazarov and his driver, Igor Prokhorov.

The boat capsized, and all three ended up in the water. The current situation is as follows: The bodies of Sergei Loytner and driver Igor Prokhorov were found. Missing: Rescuers are still searching for the body of developer Nazarov. Strange details: sources report that Leutner’s head has injuries. It’s unclear whether these were sustained during the ship’s capsizing or under other circumstances. Since February 2022, Russia has seen an abnormally high mortality rate among executives at major corporations, particularly in the energy and technology sectors. Leutner’s death is just the latest in a long chain:

Gazprom under attack: The string of deaths began in January 2022 with the death of Leonid Shulman. Later, the bodies of Gazprombank Vice President Vladislav Avaev and his family were found in Moscow, and those of Alexander Tyulyakova near St. Petersburg. Lukoil’s curse: The company lost several top managers at once. Ravil Maganov died after falling from a window at the Central Clinical Hospital, his successor, Vladimir Nekrasov, died suddenly of heart failure, and in March 2024, Vice President Vitaly Robertus passed away. Windows and high-rise buildings: Falls from great heights have become a recurring scenario. This is how Mikhail Rogachev died in October 2024, and Transneft Vice President Andrey Badalov, who fell from the 17th floor of a building on Rublyovka in July 2025.

The geography of these incidents is not limited to Russia—in 2022, former Novatek top manager Sergei Protosenya was found shot to death in Spain. Although official accounts in most cases point to accidents, suicides, or sudden illnesses, the systematic nature of these deaths raises serious questions among international observers. So a wave of suspicious high-profile deaths swept through Russia’s through the ranks of officials, business leaders, and top executives of major state-linked corporations. Most of the deceased held critical roles in strategically important sectors: oil and gas, finance, the defense industry, transport, and public administration. The peak of suspicious deaths occurred in 2022, coinciding with the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and a significant increase in international sanctions. This period could have been marked by rising internal tensions and possibly certain “purges” within the Russian elites, which most likely had a direct connection to money siphoning and laundering.
