An angry crowd rioted outside a hospital in Alice Springs on Thursday, where a man accused of killing a 5-year-old girl was being treated after a vigilante beating. According to Associated Press nighttime visuals showed police dragging protesters away as crowds gathered outside the hospital, shouting and confronting officers. Some protesters threw objects toward police, while smoke rose near the scene and police vehicles were surrounded and damaged. The suspect, Jefferson Lewis, allegedly abducted the girl from an Indigenous community near Alice Springs in central Australia over the weekend. Her body was found Thursday. She is referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby in line with Indigenous cultural practices that avoid naming the dead. Lewis was beaten unconscious by a mob before being arrested later Thursday, police said. He was taken to Alice Springs Hospital, where hundreds of people demanded he face so-called payback under customary law, which can involve spearing or beating. Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
“I want to say this is really wrong and real sad, real hurt and the feeling that they are protecting this guy, shooting us with rubber bullets … People got shot a couple of years ago for this stuff. And it’s like the system is not sticking up for us,” said Harley Myers, a local resident. The hospital later discharged Lewis to police, who flew him to Darwin, about 1,500 kilometers to the north, for his own safety. On Friday, Indigenous leaders and police addressed a news conference, calling for calm after the unrest. “What we saw last night was disgraceful behavior … however, it was only a minority that engaged in that behavior,” said James Gray-Spence of Northern Territory Police. “The standard we stand by is the cooperation and collaboration we have seen from the Alice Springs community.”
