As details about the crackdown on protests in Iran slowly emerge, a series of leaked photos and videos from the Kahrizak morgue have sparked widespread outrage. The images show bodies that appear to have been taken to the morgue straight from hospitals, before medical equipment was even removed. Some of the dead are also seen wearing hospital gowns or surgical clothing typically used for in-patient treatment or preparation for surgery. According to a specialist physician, these signs suggest that the bodies were moved straight from medical facilities to the morgue, without going through the usual discharge process or standard post-mortem procedures.
But some victims were still breathing among the bodies of dead protesters seen at Tehran’s Kahrizak Forensic Medical Center after a crackdown on protests in the capital, witnesses said in messages sent to Iran International. According to the accounts, witnesses saw “two piles of bodies” at Kahrizak, some of whom were still breathing, with security forces stacking bodies on top of one another. Three eye witnesses said security forces used live ammunition and metal pellets during demonstrations in eastern Tehran on Jan. 9, leaving streets “filled with blood.” They said the shooting took place in the area from Golbarg Street toward Haft-Hoz, adding that it was impossible to film because “bullets and pellets were coming from all directions.” The witnesses described seeing the body of a naked man lying in a roadside drainage channel. The eyewitnesses said they were injured but did not seek medical treatment out of fear of arrest or being shot at close range. They said clinics were overwhelmed with wounded people and that residents searching for missing relatives were forced to step over bodies. Roozbeh Esfandiari, a physician based in Houston, United States, with a background in Tehran’s emergency services, states to IranWire: “Based on the available images, these wounded individuals were initially transferred to medical centers with primary injuries, where initial measures were taken. However, for unknown reasons, they lost their lives. Subsequently, the deceased were collected en masse from a hospital.”
Regarding the deceased who had intubation tubes – used to keep the airway open and assist with breathing – Dr. Esfandiari says: “The images indicate that these injured individuals reached the hospital with very low levels of consciousness and were intubated there.”
The doctor notes: “The mere presence of chest electrodes on the bodies does not necessarily mean they were stolen, as sometimes these are not removed after death before being sent to the morgue. This is usually the duty of the head nurse’s aide or nursing assistant, but when the number of casualties is high, they may not have the time to remove this equipment.”
Another trusted physician in this report, also anonymous, confirms these points: “Another vital detail in these images is that they show these individuals were in a formal hospital system, not a simple local clinic.” Pointing to a body in the images where only the nose is visible and a breathing tube is in the mouth, the doctor explains: “The knots used to fix the respiratory tubes are entirely professional and compliant with hospital standards. This method of securing tubes shows that the actions were performed by trained medical staff in a hospital environment.”
This physician states: “Two medical scenarios are likely: either the individual died during transfer, or they entered the treatment cycle with vital signs. If a person enters the medical system as a patient, even in the event of death, their body must undergo a specific medical protocol: recording resuscitation efforts, removing medical equipment, and documenting the physical condition. In standard medical centers, this process is clear and evaluable.”
