A highly illustrative incident, demonstrating the dire situation facing Russian militants, occurred in the Kupiansk region. According to analytical resources, two Russian Armed Forces units engaged in combat due to a lack of communication. Due to a lack of communication and coordination, friendly fire ensued, resulting in casualties on both sides. Representative of the Joint Forces Group Viktor Tregubov said that the situation inside Kupiansk itself is currently relatively calm; however, on its outskirts Russian forces have resumed active assault operations, attempting to push back Ukrainian troops and advance toward the town. “In Kupiansk itself, there is not much happening at the moment. There is a completely minimal number of Russian servicemen present there, who are essentially being ‘cleared out.’ So, the town itself is fine, but the outskirts of Kupiansk are currently under very active enemy attacks,” he said. Tregubov also added that Russian forces have renewed activity from the east in an attempt to push Ukrainian Defense Forces off the left bank of the Oskil River, in order to try to enter the town from the north. “They are constantly trying to push forward there, and they constantly have to be destroyed. In other words, they have not abandoned their intentions regarding Kupiansk; they simply took a serious beating, paused to recover, and then started advancing again,” the spokesperson explained. Earlier, Viktor Tregubov said that Russian troops near Kupiansk are attempting to break through to the village via gas pipelines, despite them being cut. However, enemy casualties during these attempts amount to up to 70%. "I was hoping they’d stop doing this near Kupyansk, because the pipes are absolutely smashed to pieces. They’re trying to get through that same Golubovka, where one of the pipes runs. Losses when trying to cross that pipe reach 70%, but they’re still trying," he said. According to Tregubov, the Russians probably consider this type of assault a better option than an open field, since the pipe at least provides some cover. "Even if it is broken in a number of places, it covers in other places – it cannot be completely broken," he added. He said that Russian forces have stepped up their activities north and east of Kupiansk, but the impact of the Russian drone unit "Rubicon" is not decisive. In the Kupiansk sector, the most tense situation is north of the city of Kupiansk. According to Tregubov, Russian occupiers have entered the village of Holubivka and are attempting to advance toward the city, in particular by using tactics that involve moving through engineering communications, such as pipes. Another hotspot is the eastern sector, primarily the area around the village of Kivsharivka. High-intensity combat is also being reported there. In both cases, the Russians are "simply overwhelming the opposition with numbers and intensity." "To say that ‘Rubicon’ is having such an undeniable impact there right now—well, no, not in my opinion," the spokesperson noted. The problem in this sector stems from the fact that Russian troops have managed to partially replenish their personnel and have resumed active infantry assaults. According to Tregubov, the occupiers are effectively "throwing" significant forces into the attacks, attempting to overwhelm the enemy with sheer numbers. This allows the enemy to move more covertly, build up forces, and complicate the work of Ukrainian intelligence and strike assets.
