Russian soldiers and military bloggers have lashed out at the Kremlin after authorities restricted access to the Telegram messaging app. Roskomnadzor, Russia’s internet regulator, announced the introduction of the most stringent restrictions on Telegram to date . Roskomnadzor, the country’s internet regulator, explained that this measure [slowing down the messaging app] is aimed at protecting citizens from "criminal and terrorist" content, marking the latest stage of Moscow’s pressure on a free internet.
Over the past six months, new limits have been imposed on Telegram and WhatsApp at least three times, with audio and video calls on both platforms blocked since August. Meanwhile, at least three-quarters of Russia’s population over 13 regularly use the app. This includes members of the military, Kremlin officials, state media, and government agencies—including Roskomnadzor itself, The Telegraph reports .
Occupation forces on the front lines in Ukraine are reportedly using Telegram to transmit target coordinates and track incoming drones. This announcement, following Elon Musk’s shutdown of Starlink terminals, sparked a storm of outrage, particularly among the vast ecosystem of aggressive Russian military bloggers. As proponents of the war and a constant source of frontline reports on Telegram, they are becoming increasingly critical and inconvenient for the government.
The media outlet writes that war correspondents are "the mainstay of the war information space for ordinary Russians," operating outside the tightly controlled narratives of state media. They maintain direct contact with soldiers on the front lines, who provide them with exclusive news and combat footage. Bloggers use this content to raise funds for the occupying army.
"Thousands of troops will be left without communication, which, given the ongoing offensive, will lead to fatal consequences," warned one Russian war correspondent.
Another well-known war correspondent, Alexander Sladkov, stated:
"The West gave us a two-day knockout with the Starlink shutdown, and now we’re burying that command and communication channel, too. So what exactly are we supposed to win with, what tools? Nonsense and TA-57 field phones [a Soviet-era analog phone]?"
One Russian nationalist responded more harshly, declaring that "when some people who came to power out of nowhere are dragged to the notorious Hague, no one will even utter a peep."
Four years into full-scale war, the Russian army still lacks a reliable, domestically developed communications system and remains dependent on private platforms. Throughout most of the Russian army, down to the platoon level, Telegram chats have become ad hoc logistics hubs, where units coordinate musters, ammunition, and equipment procurement. The application is also used at higher levels to create improvised "reconnaissance-strike circuits" that allow military intelligence to transmit target coordinates directly to artillery and aircraft, bypassing formal command channels.
