The Ukrainian air defense demonstrated a brilliant performance, intercepting 19 of the 20 cruise missiles. However, the F-16 pilots deserve a significant credit for shooting down the missiles.
Instead of the usual nighttime raids, the enemy began launching attack drones en masse during the day, and in the evening, attacking with strategic cruise missiles. This was stated by Yuriy Ignat, Head of the Communications Department of the Ukrainian Air Force, on air at Ranok.LIVE . According to him, the use of missile weapons was unusual. Instead of isolated launches, by evening the enemy launched Kh-101 missiles from strategic aircraft and ground-based Iskander-K cruise missiles. "Already during the daytime on April 15, the enemy continued its attacks, and approximately 200 UAVs were recorded. This means the timeframe has changed. While previously this was only done at night, now the enemy is using them during the day as well, specifically the Shaheds. Another unusual feature is the use of cruise missiles, as the enemy had previously used Iskander-K missiles, including Kalibr missiles, sporadically during the day. But in the evening, Kh-101 strategic air defense missiles, as well as Iskander-K missiles, are flying. Ground-based cruise missiles are flying in the evening, which is what actually happened yesterday. Twenty such missiles. The ballistic missiles were launched at night," Ignat explained.
However, as the speaker emphasized, the Ukrainian air defense demonstrated a brilliant result, intercepting 19 out of 20 cruise targets. "I want to emphasize that out of 20, 19 are excellent results, and our F-16 pilots, who have extensive experience in using cruise missiles, deserve a lot of credit for this," he said. At the same time, Ignat added that, despite the successes of aviation, the most difficult situation remains with ballistic weapons. It was Russian ballistic weapons, according to Ignat, that unfortunately penetrated the defenses and led to horrific consequences and widespread destruction in four cities at once: Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. Ukrainian F‑16s do carry out ground strikes against Russian positions. In fact, they do that quite often, but this is not bringing Ukraine closer to victory. In fact, the primary mission of Ukrainian F-16s is very different. These are actually mostly defensive weapons.
At the moment, Ukraine’s F‑16s are focused mainly on air defense. Their significance lies in providing safer skies – airspace that Russian pilots now avoid. Manned Russian aircraft no longer enter Ukrainian airspace, though missiles and drones continue to terrorize civilians.
The first batch of F‑16s arrived in Ukraine in July of last year. Initially, there were only a handful of these fighter jets in Ukraine, but their numbers gradually increased. The exact number of F-16s in service with the Air Force of Ukraine remains undisclosed, though it is believed to be just over 30. That represents roughly half of the promised fighter jets. A fleet of 30 F-16s is still relatively small. Especially having in mind how large Ukraine is and how long the frontline is. On the other hand, the Ukrainian fleet of F-16s is not as small as the one of Mirage 2000s – Ukraine has only six of these French jet fighters. Even in such small numbers, Ukrainian F‑16s have already proven their worth in this war. In just over a year, they have shot down more than 1,300 Russian cruise missiles and long‑range drones. This is a remarkable achievement, given how few of these jets Ukraine has and how recently they entered service.
