Direct threats have been made in Russia against several countries, including Israel, for allegedly producing weapons for Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Defense has published a list of foreign companies that, according to the Russian side, are involved in the production of drones and components for Kyiv. The list includes facilities in several countries, including Israel. Following the publication of the list, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev issued a strong statement. He asserted that the published data should be taken literally, calling these facilities potential targets for the Russian armed forces. According to him, the question of whether to launch strikes depends on how the situation develops. Thus, the Russian side has effectively opened the door to attacks outside Ukraine, including on the territories of countries not directly involved in the fighting.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu warned Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania of Moscow’s right to self-defense if Ukrainian drone strikes are carried out over their airspace. According to Shoigu, such strikes on Russia via Finland and the Baltic states have recently become more frequent. As a result, civilian infrastructure suffers significantly, and "civilians suffer," he stated.
"This can happen in two cases: either Western air defense systems are extremely ineffective, as has already happened during the events in the Middle East, or these states are deliberately providing their airspace, i.e., they are open accomplices to aggression against Russia," Shoigu reasoned. In the latter case, according to international law, Article 51 of the UN Charter on the inalienable right of states to self-defense in the event of an armed attack comes into force, the head of the Security Council concluded.
In this case Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin held a series of telephone conversations with the leaders of Iran and Israel amid the recent escalation in the Middle East. The Russian dictator expressed condolences to Tehran over the strikes on military targets and attempted to assume the role of peacemaker, urging both sides to seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict. In a conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin emphasized Moscow’s condemnation of Jerusalem’s actions. According to the dictator, whose troops are now in their fourth year of waging a full-scale war of conquest, Israel’s attacks constitute a "violation of the UN Charter and international law." Particular attention was paid to the civilian casualties in the Islamic Republic, prompting the Kremlin to offer official condolences to the theocratic regime. At the same time, the Russian leader contacted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During their conversation, Putin insisted on the need to return to political and diplomatic dialogue. The Kremlin leader offered his services as a mediator to resolve the situation, despite the fact that Russia itself is under unprecedented international sanctions for violating the very world order to which the dictator now appeals. The Kremlin press service also declared Russia’s support for a peaceful resolution to the Iranian nuclear program. Putin allegedly put forward certain "concrete initiatives" to achieve mutually acceptable agreements, but their nature remained undisclosed. Notably, these calls come amid months of sabotage by Tehran itself, which has systematically blocked any attempts at a peaceful resolution to the situation surrounding its nuclear developments.
