Civilian deaths rise in Ukraine after new wave of Russian strikes | Morning Report

In Ukraine, at least 6 people died and over 20 were injured in the latest wave of Russian attacks against the country’s civilian population. The latest developments in the Middle East have shifted America’s focus away from Kyiv, but according to former U.S. Ambassador to Poland Daniel Fried, even with limited success of the United States in the Middle East, Washington’s attention could turn back to Ukraine. The former U.S. diplomat added that chances of success in Kyiv are much higher than they are in Tehran.

As Hungary continues to block the EU’s proposed €90-billion loan for Ukraine, Brussels is facing one of the most serious deadlocks in recent months. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticized Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán’s efforts to derail the plan, adding that measures will be taken to ensure financial support for war-torn Ukraine continues despite Hungary’s veto.

While the EU tries to unlock funding for Kyiv’s resistance against Russian aggression, there are growing fears that Ukraine’s war chest could run dry as early as May if Hungary continues to veto the plan. In Brussels, political leaders of the EU spoke out on the issue, with Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán remaining adamant he would not allow the funding to be released.
