NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Russian missiles pose a danger not only to Tallinn or Vilnius, but also to London and Madrid. He announced this during a joint press conference with the Commander-in-Chief of the alliance forces in Europe, Alex Grinkevich.
"I don’t like this whole eastern flank concept because it gives the impression that I’m safer living in Madrid or London than in Tallinn. And that’s not true," Rutte said.
The NATO Secretary General mentioned that the speed of the latest Russian missiles after launch will exceed the speed of sound by five times. Therefore, the rockets will be able to reach Madrid or London just five or 10 minutes later than Tallinn or Vilnius.
“ So in that sense, let’s agree that within this alliance for 32 countries, we all live on the eastern flank,” he said.
Grynkewich made a very similar point as he drew on his first-hand experience “from my time in the Middle East.” He said:
“The range that those drones can fly, and the paths that they can take, we are all vulnerable to them. So the eastern flank provides a first line of defence for this.
And if those drones get through that first line of defence, they can be paired with the ballistic missiles or other capabilities that hold the entire alliance at risk.
So I do think while it is an eastern sentry line that we’re working to defend, it is on behalf of the entire alliance that this is going forward.”
It should be recalled that Rutte earlier announced that NATO is launching the Eastern Sentry operation to strengthen the defense of Europe’s eastern flank in response to Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace.
On the night of September 10, around 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, most of them from Belarus. Air defense forces managed to shoot down four of the drones.
Rutte praised the “very successful” operation, which he said involved Polish and Dutch fighter jets, Italian surveillance aircraft and German Patriot air defense systems.
Following the incident, Poland called for emergency consultations with NATO allies — invoking the alliance’s so-called Article 4 clause. Rutte said NATO’s 32 members had “expressed solidarity with Poland and denounced Russia’s reckless behavior.”
