The Russian Armed Forces lost a helicopter in Africa. The soldiers on board did not survive. This was reported by Russian Z-blogger Ilya Tumanov – Fighterbomber. The Russian Ministry of Defense and official media remain silent. "Our helicopter was lost in Africa. The crew and the mobile fire team on board were killed," reported Z-blogger. He clarified that, according to preliminary data, the plane was shot down by an anti-aircraft system. The propagandist did not provide any details. It’s worth noting that Russia has a significant military presence in Africa, spanning approximately 10 countries. The Wagner PMC was previously active there. However, after its mutiny and liquidation, its functions were taken over by the so-called "Africa Corps" of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The helicopter was preliminarily lost in Mali. Previously Reuters reported the downing of a Russian helicopter by Tuaregs in Mali. Russian mercenaries from the "Africa Corps," supporting the Malian military junta led by Assimi Goita, lost several units of military equipment during a joint offensive by Tuareg rebels and jihadists on Malian military positions. According to the Agency, citing Russian military public accounts, Russian militants lost a helicopter, and the crew and mobile fire team were killed. In addition, a video was published online showing a burned-out BTR-82A and a VP11 armored vehicle belonging to Russian mercenaries. Footage has also emerged of an armored Tornado-U truck captured by opponents of the junta. Prior to this, it became known that Tuareg rebels reported the capture of the city of Kidal and announced an agreement allowing Russian mercenaries to leave their camp in the area of the city. At the same time, several videos appeared online showing Russian military equipment driving past jubilant Islamists without a fight. Russia’s main military presence in Africa collapsed in Mali . Tuaregs and jihadists from the JNIM group simultaneously attacked Bamako, Kidal, Gao, and Sévaré. Mali’s Defense Minister, General Sadio Camara—Moscow’s closest ally and the architect of Russian-Malian military cooperation— was killed : a suicide truck bombing occurred near his residence in Kati. Several members of his family died along with him. Russia spent years building its presence in Mali, pushing out the French and the UN mission, and bringing in Wagner, renamed the Afrika Korps. When the crisis hit, the Russian corps negotiated a "safe corridor" with the rebels and withdrew from besieged Kidal virtually without a fight. Left alone against the enemy, Malian allies began to surrender en masse. The flag of the Tuareg Front for the Liberation of Azawad was raised over the former UN base in Kidal. Kidal was recaptured from rebels in November 2023 by the Malian army and the Afrika Korps. Moscow presented this as key proof of the effectiveness of its security model in Africa. Now the city is back in Tuareg hands. The offensive was the largest in recent years, with attacks targeting the presidential residence, the Ministry of Defence headquarters and Bamako International Airport. The Russian Foreign Ministry has already stated that Western security forces may have been involved in preparing the attacks.
