The war in Ukraine has finally moved away from the imagery of World War I. The solid lines of trenches have disappeared, replaced by a deadly gray zone up to 20 kilometers wide, where drones , soldier hunts, and the complete collapse of logistics reign, writes Politico .
The skies above the front are constantly buzzing with reconnaissance, attack, and "sleeper" drones, which activate when vehicles or personnel approach. Ukrainian and Russian drones engage each other in combat, searching for pilots tens of kilometers deep in the rear. The drones see almost everything—and immediately direct fire.
Ukrainian officers say this is already a "drone war." "We’ve transitioned to a drone-on-drone war," said Colonel Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine and a former battlefield commander. "Drones can now set up ambushes, intercept enemy logistics, and disrupt supply lines. They’ve also made holding positions more difficult: if you’re detected, every weapon in the area will immediately rush to destroy you."
A deep "gray zone" has formed—an area between positions where Russian groups hide, maneuver, and wait for opportunities to attack.
Weather conditions became a factor: fog and rain opened up windows for the enemy to break through, as happened in Pokrovsk and in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnepropetrovsk areas.
Drones make rotations and supplies nearly impossible.
"Most soldiers die during rotation. Vehicles don’t get closer than 5-6 kilometers. The rest of the way, the soldiers cover on foot, hiding from enemy FPVs," says Colonel Vladislav Voloshin.
Commanders are forced to leave units at zero strength for weeks at a time. This is damaging to morale.
"An infantryman who has spent 60-165 days in a hole will never return," emphasizes analyst Nikolai Beleskov.
The situation with the wounded is dramatic. Due to the risks, medical centers are being moved further away, and evacuations are being delayed – sometimes for days or weeks. Combat medics are forced to use telemedicine due to drones.
"We teach our soldiers how to apply tourniquets using videos from the Mavic," says anesthesiologist Daria from Da Vinci Wolves.
The wounded often crawl several kilometers to the evacuation point. Enemy drones ambush even armored vehicles, with a range of 20-40 km.
Russia is systematically expanding the "death zone," leveling the shelters with pinpoint strikes to ensure that Ukrainian troops have no place to hide.
Drone operators are now in the crosshairs themselves. A fighter with the call sign "Sekach" says:
"In the 10-kilometer zone, you can no longer go out for a smoke without a shotgun."
