Ukraine’s drone attack on Tuapse oil refinery in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region has contaminated the Black Sea. Video footage shared in social media features the extent of fuel and oil contamination, with residents complaining that they cannot go to the beach. Toxic “oil rain” has blanketed the city of Tuapse in Krasnodar leaving residents struggling to breathe. Ukrainian drones targeted the port of Tuapse on the night of April 20, setting its oil terminal ablaze. The massive fire severely polluted the air, and days later heavy rains mixed with particles from burning petroleum products fell over the city, coating streets, homes, and beaches with oily soot. The oil spill has contaminated the Black Sea. A reporter from the independent journalists’ cooperative Bereg traveled to Russia’s Krasnodar region to witness the aftermath of what locals describe as an ecological catastrophe. The report, republished by Meduza, paints a grim picture of the situation unfolding in Tuapse. The oil terminal had already been hit once before, on the night of April 16, when another Ukrainian drone strike ignited a fire that burned for four days before firefighters managed to contain it. Following the first attack, petroleum products leaked into the Tuapse River and the nearby waters of the Black Sea. In an attempt to limit the contamination, authorities deployed floating barriers and equipment designed to collect the spreading oil. A second strike on April 20 triggered another large blaze that firefighters battled for nearly five days. On April 24, amid torrential rains, oil products reportedly overflowed the containment barriers and spread further into coastal waters and onto the shoreline. Environmental experts warned that smoke from such fires contains highly toxic substances, including chemical vapors, soot particles, and microscopic oil droplets that pose serious health risks when inhaled.
