The atmosphere within the Kremlin is becoming increasingly paranoid amid setbacks on the front lines in Ukraine and mounting problems in the Russian economy, The Telegraph reports.

The publication notes that available data indicates a significant depletion of the Russian military machine after several years of offensive operations and heavy losses.

According to the American Institute for the Study of War, in April, for the first time since the Ukrainian operation in the Kursk region in August 2024, the Russian army lost more territory than it occupied. Overall, over the past six months, Russian troops have captured significantly less territory than in the same period the previous year. The Telegraph writes that if the current pace of the offensive continues, Russia will need decades to completely capture Donbas, which the Kremlin cites as a key condition for any peace agreement. However, analysts explain that this situation will not fundamentally change in the foreseeable future, as the dominance of drones in the air prevents Russia from realizing its numerical superiority and achieving a strategic breakthrough anywhere on the front.

The publication notes that the Russian army is suffering from logistics and communications problems at the front, and its losses are already reaching astronomical levels. According to independent Russian journalists, Russia has lost over 350,000 soldiers killed in action alone. Moreover, the rate of recruitment of new contract soldiers is no longer sufficient to compensate for these losses. Against this backdrop, the Russian economy is increasingly experiencing problems. The Telegraph reports that in the first quarter of 2026, the Russian economy contracted by 0.3% amid falling oil and gas revenues and weakening business activity.

Given these military problems and economic woes, "the atmosphere in the Kremlin is becoming increasingly paranoid," the publication states. The journalists cite a recently published intelligence report from a European country, which claims Putin spends a significant portion of his time in bunkers, avoids using internet-enabled devices, and focuses almost entirely on daily military meetings.

Despite this, Ukrainian military officials warn that it’s too early to talk about Russia’s imminent collapse. Ukrainian Armed Forces commanders suggest that Moscow may be preparing new offensive operations with the arrival of drier weather. However, as the publication concludes, the image of "inexorable Russian strength and unlimited human resources" that Putin has spent years trying to project to the world is gradually beginning to crumble.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has always been a paranoid man. We know, for example, that he has long eschewed the use of a personal cellphone, all too aware of how easily they can be tracked.Yet a Kremlin document recently leaked to the press by a European intelligence service lays bare a whole new level of suspicion. Visitors can only approach him after they’ve gone through two layers of screening. His bodyguards now exercise full control over his schedule of appearances; they’ve essentially eliminated visits to any location that has to do with the military. And as for mobile phones: No one who works near Putin is now allowed to have one—they can only carry devices that aren’t connected to the internet. Surveillance systems have been placed in the homes of the cooks, drivers, and cleaners who work for him; they are prohibited from using public transportation. Most revealingly, he and his family members no longer live in their customary residences. Instead, they are sticking to secret locations with extra layers of protection.
