The occupiers have learned to use drones more effectively on the front lines, which helps them maintain their offensive.
As The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported , Russia’s drone strategy on the battlefield focuses on medium-range drones, ranging from 20 to 80 km. Priority targets include Ukrainian drone operators and logistics facilities.
The WSJ emphasized that, in contrast, Ukraine’s approach remains largely aimed at inflicting maximum casualties on Russian infantry as it enters the kill zone, which begins approximately 20 kilometers from the front line. At the same time, as journalists noted, many Ukrainian soldiers and officers are talking about the need for change, and that Ukraine needs to comply with Russia’s strategy of systematically attacking the rear. Ukrainian forces could better withstand sustained Russian pressure if they focused more on striking Russian drone operators and company and battalion command posts located many kilometers behind the line of contact, said Major Oleh Shiryaev, commander of the 225th Assault Regiment, which is fighting in the Zaporizhzhia sector.
"At the tactical level, everything rests on their shoulders," he noted.
"Russia has adopted a more systematic approach to targeting Ukrainian drone groups in order to disrupt and destroy Ukrainian drone logistics, as this is the center of gravity of the Ukrainian defense system," said Franz-Stefan Gady, an Austrian military analyst.
He added that Ukraine has the best drone pilots, but their strikes on targets in the rear are fragmented.
Ukraine lacks drones and other weapons capable of striking targets at medium ranges of 30 to 190 kilometers behind the front line, Gadi noted. Additional assistance from Western partners is needed to improve its arsenal.
The publication noted that in the Zaporizhzhia region, it is easy to understand why the Russian army is unable to achieve a decisive breakthrough, despite increasing manpower and ammunition. "There, the plains stretch for miles, and the sky hums with deadly Ukrainian drones as Russian infantry attempts to cross the fields. And Russian armored vehicles are prevented from advancing by long ditches lined with barbed wire and dragon’s teeth," the publication wrote.
Shiryaev’s troops act like firefighters, rushing to the rescue whenever Russian soldiers discover gaps in Ukrainian defenses. They are doing everything possible to ensure the strategy works, Shiryaev said.
Ukraine has a large number of troops holding the front line in the Donetsk region, which has led to a shortage of troops to cover the southern front.
"The Russians are choosing a road and trying to destroy everything on it or near it. Their goal is to break the morale of Ukrainian soldiers by making any movement toward or away from the contact line terrifying," said the deputy brigade commander in the Zaporizhzhia direction.
He said his brigade is increasing its capabilities to use medium-range drones to strike Russian troops up to 24 kilometers from the front line before they can attempt infiltration. But further progress is needed. "Recently, the Russians have rarely attacked Ukrainian positions directly. Instead, small groups of soldiers are trying to outflank them and advance as far behind them as possible. The Russians are paying a high price, but they continue their offensive," the publication concluded.
