Don’t be the last to know: Europe, Ukraine and a shifting global order

This week’s episode of Don’t Be The Last To Know, opens with a powerful moment in the European Parliament, where an interpreter broke down in tears while translating the story of an 11-year-old Ukrainian boy who lost his mother in a Russian missile strike on a hospital.

The boy, Roman Oleksiv, was badly injured in the 2022 attack, suffering severe burns across nearly half of his body. Since then, he has undergone dozens of reconstructive surgeries and has become a symbol of Ukrainian resilience. His story later inspired an award-winning short film and earned recognition from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The programme also looks at Zelenskyy’s announcement that he is prepared to hold elections in Ukraine if security conditions allow, despite the ongoing war and growing international pressure.

It then turns to rising tensions between the United States and Europe, after Washington’s new National Security Strategy described Europe as “decaying” and facing “civilizational erasure.” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded directly, saying: “Europe is your closest ally, not your problem.” His post went viral after being reposted by Elon Musk, becoming the most read political comment worldwide last weekend.
