The drone war on the Russian-Ukrainian front has found its own bottleneck. With so many drones in the air and a limited radio spectrum, pilots often get in each other’s way. And when electronic warfare operators get involved, things get even more complicated, Business Insider reports.
Drone operator in the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces Dimko Zhluktenko told the publication that his unit had recently suffered from the work of a "friendly" electronic warfare system. According to him, such a situation often arises with large reconnaissance drones, since "many Ukrainian drones use the same frequencies as enemy ones." This was the case, for example, with the Russian Zala and the Ukrainian Shark.
"When friendly electronic warfare systems try to jam Zala, they also jam Shark," Zhluktenko explained.
The fighter noted that the Ukrainian military has to coordinate the launch of its drones to avoid accidental suppression. According to him, "one mile from the front line there can be more than 60 drones in the sky." In his sector, about 5 km away, there are usually at least three large Russian drones flying. However, many other devices are in the sky at the same time, and it is often difficult to determine who they belong to.
He also said that this confusion sometimes causes the infantry to panic: "They literally switch to all frequencies to be jammed because they are afraid."
Another Ukrainian drone operator, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that fighters have cases where they try to shoot down any device they see in the sky.
The problem is of particular concern to Western armies, which are developing their own small drone programs. Footage from the front in Ukraine shows soldiers sometimes unable to immediately discern whether a drone is friendly or enemy. In some cases, they even open fire with only a few seconds to decide.
The sheer number of devices leads not only to friendly jamming, but also to cases where operators accidentally gain access to enemy drone signals and see their intelligence data.
"There are so many drones and only a limited number of operating frequencies that drone data channels can switch spontaneously. Ukrainian and Russian forces are working out these issues in real time, and the lessons learned from the fighting could influence the course of future wars," Business Insider concludes.
