A heavily armed gang blew up an armored cash van during daylight in southern Italy on Monday. The attack sparked panic and a firefight on a highway. The robbery attempt by the group has been thwarted by police who respond swiftly. According to reports, at least eight armed robbers, some impersonating police with flashing lights, blocked the road by setting vehicles on fire. They used explosives to breach the cash-in-transit van and exchanged gunfire with responding Carabinieri patrols. Video footage recorded by passing motorists features at least six masked individuals, some wearing white uniforms and carrying weapons. According to investigators, the assailants used several vehicles to block traffic and detonated the van to immobilise the armoured truck. To flee the scene, the suspects allegedly hijacked cars from passing motorists. Less than an hour after the attack, the Carabinieri’s provincial command in Lecce announced the arrest of two suspects. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
