President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticized Ukraine’s drone attack on two Russian "shadow fleet" oil tankers off Turkey’s Black Sea coast, saying the incident signaled "a worrying escalation” in the conflict.
According to Associated Press speaking on Monday, he said Friday’s attacks on the Kairos and Virat vessels occurred inside Turkey’s exclusive economic zone and threatened navigational safety in the Black Sea.
"We are issuing the necessary warnings to all parties regarding such situations,” Erdogan added.
Ukraine confirmed on Saturday it carried out the attacks on the two oil tankers that were reported to be part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” that evade sanctions.
Still, he believed his troops would be able to repel any advance.
Russian troops occupy only half of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, and two-thirds of Donetsk.
The draft of a U.S.-Russia peace plan stipulated that Ukraine’s army be limited and that Kyiv’s forces must effectively withdraw from the rest of the Donetsk region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said since then that a subsequently revised version could be “workable,” but it’s unclear what will be in the final document.
