Estonia Orders South Korean K239 Chunmoo MLRS in Addition to HIMARS

Estonia has ordered six South Korean K239 Chunmoo rocket systems along with missiles.

The deal, announced by the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI), was signed with Hanwha Aerospace. These systems will join Estonia’s existing American HIMARS launchers.

The €290 million contract includes the launchers, training, and operational support.

Estonia will receive the following missiles:

  • CGR-080 – range up to 80 km
  • CTM-MR – range up to 160 km
  • CTM-290 tactical ballistic missiles – range up to 290 km

In addition, a modified version of the platforms will be ordered to ensure they meet Estonian conditions and traffic regulations.

Deliveries of the K239 Chunmoo MLRS to Estonia will begin in the second half of 2027.

The deal with Hanwha also allows for the future purchase of additional systems.

Under the contract, the South Korean company will invest one-fifth of the total amount (between €40 and €60 million) in Estonia’s defense industry.

A memorandum of understanding on future procurement was signed on October 23 by the defence ministers of both countries, Hanno Pevkur and Ahn Gyu-back, in Seoul.

In October, it was announced that Estonia would significantly strengthen its firepower by increasing the number of M142 HIMARS systems and purchasing a large batch of guided rockets for them, as well as ATACMS operational-tactical ballistic missiles.

The country will receive six additional HIMARS launchers, doubling the current number of these systems in service.
