The major war in Ukraine has lasted more than four years, and in this short time, the nature of the fighting has undergone significant changes, writes The Telegraph columnist Ben Obes-Jecty.
According to him, before the conflict, the principles of combat at the infantry platoon level had remained virtually unchanged since World War II. Moreover, the general concept of maneuver warfare, in which infantry operates in coordination with aircraft, tanks, and artillery, also remained unchanged for an equally long period.
"During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, tactical adjustments were made to counter threats specific to those theaters of operations, particularly improvised explosive devices. However, these changes were refinements of patrolling techniques developed by the British Army over several decades in Northern Ireland. These were modifications aimed at countering the threat. The basic principles and tactics of fighting under fire remained unchanged," the author emphasized. At the beginning of the war, Ukraine largely adhered to the principles of maneuver warfare, effectively utilizing equipment provided to Kyiv, namely tanks, armored personnel carriers, and tracked artillery. However, the introduction and rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicles has since led to fundamental changes in infantry tactics, which now incur the vast majority of casualties in a manner that remains uncommon worldwide, Ben noted.
"Today, the Ukrainian front is a zone 16 kilometers wide and 1,200 kilometers long, studded with sensors, where anything moving in the open is obliterated within minutes. This has necessitated the improvement of thermal and spectral camouflage to eliminate these vulnerabilities. Platoon- and squad-level movement has been replaced by cautious pairs or individuals who avoid detection. The very essence of what infantry prides itself on—speed, aggression, momentum—is bordering on obsolete," the observer explained. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov recently posted a video on social media that mercilessly exposed the horrors of modern warfare. The footage shows drones individually targeting Russian occupiers.
"As a former infantry officer, I can say this is radically different from anything I experienced in Iraq or Afghanistan. It’s brutal and harrowing. Ukraine is a barometer of where modern warfare is heading. With reports that AI-powered disposable attack drones are already in use, flying and detecting targets using their own algorithms, the future is already here," Obes-Jekty emphasized.
Forbes also reported that Ukrainian drones have learned to burn out enemies from inside buildings. According to the publication, Ukrainian drone operators can now fly right through windows and maneuver between rooms to find enemies in cover.
For such operations, they even use "paired operations" tactics. One drone can punch a hole in a wall or break glass, while the second one flies into the gap to strike. Previously, soldiers had to risk their lives entering unknown spaces that could be ambushed or booby-trapped. Today, the situation is different—drones are entering first. According to available data, small and fast drones are a very difficult target for conventional machine guns, and their ability to climb to any floor makes the concrete walls of high-rise buildings poor protection for invaders. It’s noted that "paired operations" are even used for such operations. One drone can punch a hole in a wall or break glass, while the second flies into the gap to strike.
Besides explosions, drones are known to have "learned" to be humane: they can find wounded enemies willing to surrender and take them prisoner, or eliminate guards, freeing our prisoners.
Analysts are convinced that the massive use of FPV drones allows us to literally "burn" the enemy out of city blocks, saving the lives of our defenders. Therefore, there’s no longer any point in sending attack aircraft into the fire until the drones are certain the enemy has been eliminated or neutralized.
