By 2025, Russia had significantly reduced its use of tanks on the front lines due to depleted reserves and had transitioned to a predominantly infantry-based approach. At the same time, the Russian army continued to experiment with various ways to employ tanks in a drone-dominated environment, Forbes reports.
In particular, we’ve already seen tanks with "grills," "turtle" tanks, "porcupine" tanks, and "dandelion" tanks at the front. However, all of these are ways to protect a tank. Finding a tactic for the tanks themselves that would be effective and result in fewer losses is quite another matter. And the Russians, it seems, have already come up with something similar.
The author of the publication noted recent statements by the Russian Ministry of Defense mentioning this tactic. This refers to the use of a combat pair of tanks with direct drone support.
According to Forbes, this tactic involves the first tank making a quick maneuver toward Ukrainian positions while the second provides cover fire from a distant position. The tanks then switch roles: the second tank makes a dash toward Ukrainian positions, while the first covers it. Drones monitor these maneuvers from the sky, providing reconnaissance and adjusting the tanks’ fire.
The author of the publication notes that this semi-guerrilla tactic is radically different from traditional Russian-Soviet tactics for using tanks on the battlefield. In classic doctrine, an assault begins with a powerful artillery barrage on enemy positions, followed by a large mass of armored vehicles and infantry. The goal is to achieve a significant numerical and firepower advantage on a narrow front line over an enemy demoralized by the artillery barrage. However, in the Russian-Ukrainian war, classic Soviet tactics fail already at the preparation stage: drones quickly detect attempts to concentrate an armored strike force in one area, after which the forces ready for an assault are destroyed by drones and artillery from the defending side.
