Ukraine’s recent daring naval strike on Kerch Bridge connecting Russia to occupied Crimea Peninsula can be considered a masterclass in asymmetric warfare, former US war veteran and journalist Chuck Pfarrer told Kyiv Post.
The explosion that occurred in early hours of June 3, disrupted lifeline and vital supply routes to Crimea. The blast, targeting the reinforced concrete pile bundles beneath the rail span, was likely carried out by a Marichka long-range uncrewed underwater vehicle, severely damaging the 18-kilometer structure, according to Pfarrer. Ukraine’s Security Service, SBU, maneuvered the stealthy 6-meter Marichka UUV, capable of traveling 1,000 kilometers to the bridge’s vulnerable underside. The explosion likely dislodged major structural elements, with disturbed water indicating serious damage. The targeted support piles are crucial to the bridge’s integrity, now requiring complex and costly underwater repairs, a major logistical nigmare for Russia.
The attack on Crimea Bridge follows SBU’s large-scale operation codenamed Spiderweb, which destroyed over forty Russian strategic bombers in four military airfields across Russia on Sunday. The operation disabled 34% of Russia’s Black Sea cruise missile carriers. Combined with Spiderweb operation, the strike on Crimea Bridge further boosts Ukraine’s strategic momentum. Developed by AMMO Ukraine volunteers, the Marichka UUV evaded Russian electronic defenses and delivered its payload with precision. Its deployment, synchronized with the aerial bombardment, highlights Ukraine’s growing capability to launch coordinated, multi-domain operations that keep Russian forces off balance.
The Kerch Bridge, which is a $3.7 billion project, has been attacked twice in the past few years. However, the recent attack hits harder, reminding Moscow that no infrastructure is untouchable.
