The war is rapidly spreading beyond the border areas and deep into the Russian Federation’s rear. Expert Alexey Melnik on Radio NV explained why the increasing frequency of strikes on Russian factories and oil depots is undermining the Kremlin’s authority.
The geography of the fighting has recently expanded to such an extent that targets in Tuapse, Bashkortostan, Samara, and the Leningrad Region are now under attack. As Alexey Melnyk, head of the Razumkov Center’s foreign policy and international security programs, notes, this is direct evidence that the war zone is no longer limited to the front line. He believes this situation is dealing a devastating blow to the image of the Russian government.
"The war zone is expanding. This is affecting the Kremlin’s authority, because the Kremlin, which rushed to defend, as they say, the people of Donbas, is unable to defend Russian territory. This means it’s no longer even the Kursk region; it’s already the Russian hinterland," the expert emphasized.
The Russian leadership is well aware of the scale of the problem and is trying to quell panic with proven methods. Instead of truly ensuring the safety of facilities, the authorities are strengthening censorship, blocking popular platforms like Telegram and YouTube, and introducing new administrative and criminal penalties for disseminating information. However, according to Melnik, such measures only exacerbate internal tensions in society.
"But in this case, I think it’s working against the Kremlin itself, because the cauldron is already slowly bubbling… And regarding the targets that were hit recently, the most effective way is to destroy, in fact, the enemy’s capabilities, these ballistics," he added.
The strategy of bringing the war to the aggressor’s territory by destroying its military and economic potential now seems the most logical. While explosions continue to thunder in Russian cities, the inability of air defense systems to protect strategic facilities deep in the rear is becoming obvious even to the most loyal supporters of the system.
In this case Ukrainian attack drones are now ranging freely over Donetsk city in eastern Ukraine. Once a Russian stronghold, heavily defended by surface-to-air missiles, Donetsk and the forces it shelters are now virtually defenseless against aerial attack.The 1st Azov Corps claimed its drones—reportedly fixed-wing Hornet attack drones—have “control over enemy logistics near Donetsk,” 25 miles from the front line.
“Strike UAV pilots are targeting Russian logistics deep in the operational rear,” the corps stated. “Drone units maintain constant surveillance and fire control over all supply routes around Donetsk.” “Sustained UAV activity along these routes highlights the ineffectiveness of Russian air space control,” the 1st Azov Corps pointed out.
