Ukrainian troops have begun using Martian drones to strike at the rear of the Russian army. Electronic warfare systems are unable to detect such devices, and drone detectors do not respond to them. The drones navigate using camera images of the terrain rather than satellites. This technology was previously used in space missions to Mars, hence the drone’s name.
This likely refers to the Hornet drone, developed by the American company Swift Beat LLC, headed by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt . This device’s history is unusual: it was not developed under direct Pentagon orders, but rather is a commercial project aimed at creating the most effective and affordable weapon for high-intensity conflicts. Ukraine’s continued innovation in drone technology is giving its forces an increasingly significant advantage on the battlefield and dealing serious blows to both Russia’s military and its economy, Fortune writes. Although Russia enjoyed a numerical advantage at the start of the full-scale invasion, this was subsequently offset by Western aid and the rapid development of drones, which are now causing the majority of losses, the article states. While both sides are actively modernizing their drones, Ukraine has demonstrated a faster pace of innovation and, according to recent assessments, has seized the initiative. According to the Institute for the Study of War, new Ukrainian drone developments not only create difficulties for Russian troops on the front lines but also shift the balance of power in Ukraine’s favor. Improvements to drones have led to an increase in Russian casualties in 2026 compared to 2025, when they already reached approximately 30,000 monthly. Furthermore, new technologies make it possible to more effectively destroy Russian air defense systems and intercept enemy drones. As a result, the pace of Russian troop advance has slowed, opening up opportunities for Ukraine to counterattack. According to analysts, Ukraine is actively developing its own drone industry with the support of its Western partners. Specifically, the use of new drones with artificial intelligence elements is reported, which are resistant to electronic warfare, more difficult to detect, and have a longer range. At the same time, Russia relies on mass production of a limited number of models, which hinders innovation. Military leadership inertia is cited as an additional factor.
Former CIA Director David Petraeus predicts that Ukraine could develop one of the most powerful defense-industrial complexes among democratic countries. He notes that this applies not only to airborne systems, but also to ground and maritime unmanned systems. He also noted the rapid pace of technology innovation: software is upgraded in less than a week, and hardware solutions are updated every few weeks. New Ukrainian drones make it possible to strike deep into Russia’s rear, particularly at energy infrastructure facilities. Analysts point to attacks on the port of Novorossiysk in the Black Sea, as well as on the Baltic Sea oil terminals of Primorsk and Ust-Luga, through which approximately 45% of Russian seaborne oil exports previously passed. The strikes on Primorsk reportedly destroyed approximately $200 million worth of petroleum products, and petrochemical oil exports from Ust-Luga fell by approximately 70% in late March. ISW notes that the expansion of Ukraine’s long-range strike campaign against oil infrastructure is exploiting Russia’s overstretched air defenses and causing significant damage to Russia’s export capabilities.
Ultimately, the combination of innovation, adaptation, and systemic attacks creates a cumulative effect that weakens Russian forces both at the front and in the economic sphere.
