The Ukrainian Armed Forces are maintaining a buffer zone in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation and are pushing Russians out of the Sumy region closer and closer to the border.

The head of the assault units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Hero of Ukraine Colonel Valentin Manko, said this on Radio NV , speaking about the work of assault troops in the areas.

"Regarding the Kursk region: we’re still holding that buffer zone, in the Kursk region itself. This is to prevent the enemy from advancing toward Sumy. In the Sumy region, we’ve cleared the area the enemy had infiltrated, and we’re pushing the Russians back toward the border. There’s very little left there now. We’re working there alongside airborne assault troops. The same is true in the Dobropillia area. So, our main forces are our assault units and airborne assault brigades," he said. According to him, the Kursk operation was intended to conduct a major march—to penetrate deep into Russian territory, outflank enemy forces, capture prisoners, and recapture a buffer zone as far from our border as possible. "It turned out to be an even deeper push. Well, it was kind of planned, we did push. But the Russians reacted so strongly that they began amassing powerful troops there," Man’ko said.

In his opinion, overall this operation was carried out “as successfully as possible”.

"Well, everything becomes clear by comparison, I guess. Anyone who’s talking about the Kursk operation being necessary can ask the people of Sumy. If we hadn’t gone, they (the Russians) would have gone. And the people of Sumy weren’t exactly sure what the operation was all about at first. But now they’re saying, ‘You guys can hold out longer and push them back even deeper.’ I really want to live peacefully on my own land and not have to deal with the fears of war."

As reported, the Kursk operation began on August 6, 2024. Then, the Ukrainian Armed Forces crossed the Ukrainian-Russian border and began advancing deep into Russian territory. This was the first Ukrainian combined arms operation on the territory of an aggressor country since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Kursk operation continues today, with our troops holding their positions in the Kursk region of Russia despite constant Russian counteroffensives.

Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported this summer that Ukrainian troops control 90 square kilometers of territory in the Kursk region. According to him, the Ukrainian Kursk operation at the time consumed nearly 63,000 Russian troops, and approximately 70,000 combined with the North Koreans.

According to the general, during the fighting in the Kursk region, the Russians lost 80,000 people killed and wounded.

The Kursk operation led to a sharp rise in morale among Ukrainian military and civilians.
