Rescue workers and local residents are dealing with the aftermath of severe flooding that has hit several regions in Russia’s North Caucasus following heavy rains. According to Associated Press thousands of people have been evacuated in Dagestan and Chechnya. Authorities in Dagestan declared a state of emergency after torrential rains that began on Saturday triggered flooding across the region. Water flows from the Caucasus Mountains destroyed several river bridges, while more than 133 settlements were left without electricity. The head of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, said in a Telegram post that rainfall in some areas exceeded 50 millimeters, marking a record for recent years. Authorities are continuing evacuations in flooded areas. According to the Emergency Situations Ministry, around 3,000 people have been evacuated. Flooding caused by heavy rains has also affected neighboring Chechnya. On March 29, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov announced the state of emergency in the region. The Gudermes district has been among the worst affected, with about 750 homes flooded and around 500 residents evacuated, according to rescuers. Meteorologists expect the rains to subside by Sunday evening.
