The German Air Force has deployed fighter jets to Poland to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank, according to reports by German news agency dpa.
According to Associated Press several Eurofighters took off from Nörvenich Air Base and headed for the Polish military airfield in Malbork, according to the German Air Force.
The deployment is a response to recent reports of airspace violations by Russian fighter jets in the Baltic Sea region and the entry of drones into NATO territory.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had already announced the move in mid-October.
The German Armed Force is also sending a contingent of around 150 men and women with the aircrafts, including pilots, technicians, logisticians, security guards and military police.
The deployment is initially planned to last until March, according to dpa.
