In Russia, more and more public figures—from politicians to bloggers and influencers—are beginning to openly criticize the government, the economic situation, and the consequences of the war in Ukraine. New cracks have appeared in dictator Vladimir Putin’s "image of invincibility," writes British journalist and historian Owen Matthews in a column for The Telegraph.
One of the most high-profile statements was made by Gennady Zyuganov, leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, who warned in parliament of the risks of economic instability and compared the situation to the historical upheavals of the early 20th century. He warned of the risks of economic instability, stating that the country could face "crisis shocks," and compared the situation to the historical events of 1917. His words became one of the harshest public assessments of Russia’s economic situation in parliament in recent years. At the same time, influencers and bloggers who had previously refrained from making political statements have become increasingly active in the Russian information space. They have begun openly discussing rising prices, inflation, business problems, and disruptions in digital infrastructure, particularly periodic mobile internet outages in certain regions. A video message from former Russian TV show host Victoria Bonya caused a stir. She spoke of a "deep gap" between the government and society, emphasizing that fear of the government is widespread among both citizens and officials. Despite her residing abroad, her video garnered tens of millions of views and was publicly commented on by Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov. Former politicians and media personalities, including those who previously supported the official Kremlin line, also joined in the critical remarks. Topics included the economic downturn, the closure of businesses due to debt burdens, and the overall rise in social tensions. At the same time, even some pro-war bloggers, known as the Z-community, have begun publicly acknowledging the problems caused by Ukrainian drone strikes on military and energy infrastructure deep within Russian territory. Despite this, there is no talk yet of a systemic political crisis. Analysts estimate that the Russian economy remains relatively stable thanks to the Central Bank’s oversight and revenues from energy exports, although inflation, according to official data, remains high, with the key interest rate hovering around 14%. Some regions of the Russian Federation are even experiencing short-term economic growth thanks to large payments to the military and compensation to the families of the deceased, which partially supports consumer demand.
The main change was not the economy, but the social atmosphere: criticism of the government – even in the form of local complaints about inflation or bureaucracy – became significantly more public and widespread than in previous years. Despite strict laws punishing "discrediting the army" and the risk of imprisonment for political statements, more and more people are openly discussing the problems, although they avoid direct criticism of the war or Putin personally. The author concludes: "Of course, there’s no chance Putin will be removed from office. But with the economy struggling after more than four years of endless war, cracks are starting to appear in Putin’s veneer of invincibility."
