A snowstorm has hit Russia’s Ural region, causing mass traffic accidents and major traffic jams on federal highways and in cities, local Telegram channels reported. A heavy snowfall that began in the Sverdlovsk region on Saturday night, is still ongoing. Video footage from the region show snow-covered streets and long queues of cars stuck in a traffic jam. In Yekaterinburg city in Sverdlovsk region, road services cannot keep up with clearing the streets, and snowdrifts are forming. On one street, a tram derailed after the tracks were buried in snow. Motorists are stuck in traffic, with traffic barely moving. Because of the snowfall, access roads to garbage containers in residential yards are blocked, and utility vehicles cannot reach them to collect waste. The situation is even worse outside the city. On the Tyumen Trakt, cars are moving at minimal speed for safety reasons. On the Perm Trakt, a massive traffic jam has formed after several trucks collided, traffic is almost completely blocked. Residents are running out of fuel, and the detour through Novoalekseyevskoye is also blocked. On the Orenburg–Orsk highway in the region, there are extremely strong winds and low visibility; the same situation is reported on the federal M-5 highway toward Chelyabinsk. Russia has been hit by record snowfall this year with parts of Far East region being buried under its heaviest snowfall in 60 years. Two people were killed and thirteen others injured in the country since 2026 due to falling snow and ice from rooftops. Some 44 cases of roof collapses caused by excessive snow load have been recoded nationwide since February 13, according to the Russian emergencies ministry. Meanwhile, “snow apocalypse” have been observed in Far East Kamchatka Peninsula where streets, cars and entire neighbourhoods have been buried under drifts. Public transportation was partially suspended in the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky due to the extreme hight of snow.
