Hungary seizes millions in cash and gold from Ukrainian convoy | Ukraine Brief

Hungary has detained vehicles belonging to Ukraine’s state bank, along with seven employees transporting cash and gold from Austria to Ukraine. Hungarian authorities claim the shipment raises suspicions of money laundering, while Kyiv insists it was a routine transfer conducted under an international agreement with Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the move as “racketeering and terrorism,” accusing Hungary of effectively taking Ukrainian bank workers hostage. At the end of the day, Hungary released the Ukrainian nationals, who safely crossed the Ukrainian border; however, the transported cash still remains in Hungary. Meanwhile, Russia continues overnight strikes on Ukrainian regions, killing at least two civilians and damaging residential areas. While visiting the eastern frontline city of Druzhkivka, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia is preparing a new spring offensive as Ukraine secured the return of 300 soldiers and two civilians in the latest prisoner exchange with Moscow.
