Iran’s Generation Z played a key role in organizing and spurring mass anti-government protests, but it was the youth who paid the highest price. This is written by The Wall Street Journal. According to human rights organizations, approximately half of those killed during the crackdown on protests belong to Generation Z. As the publication notes, the protests were initially triggered by a severe economic crisis, but with the active involvement of young people, they quickly transformed into a direct challenge to Iran’s existing political system. The WSJ cites several confirmed cases of deaths of teenagers who were detained or shot during protests in various cities across the country. According to the publication’s sources, some of the victims were taken to medical facilities before being removed by security forces. As The Wall Street Journal points out, the Iranian authorities’ response to the protests has become one of the harshest episodes of political repression in Iran’s modern history.
It should be noted that Generation Z is a term used worldwide for the generation of people born from approximately the mid-1990s to the early 2010s. According to media reports, protesters may have become victims of the regime already in prison, having been detained after mass clashes.
Accumulating reports from Iran paint a grim picture of what is happening in prisons, detention centers and hospitals amid a wave of brutal repression against protesters. Iranian media, citing eyewitnesses, human rights organizations, and various sources, report that detainees may be forcibly injected with unknown substances while in custody. According to the channel, this is accompanied by an increase in the number of deaths among current and former prisoners. Shiva Mahboubi, a former political prisoner and spokesperson for the Campaign for the Release of Political Prisoners in Iran, stated that her organization is collecting evidence of systematic human rights violations against detainees, particularly protesters, who have been injured during protests. According to her, prisoners are denied medical care and are sometimes injected with unknown substances. Mahboubi emphasized: "One massacre occurred on the streets, while another can quietly occur inside prisons and detention centers." She added that Iranian authorities strictly restrict access to detention facilities, warn families against public speaking, and there is virtually no independent medical or forensic oversight. However, according to Mahboubi, the collected evidence points to a systematic nature of the violations, not isolated incidents. Injured protesters are reportedly often taken directly to prisons, bypassing hospitals, and in some cases, left without medical care. In several documented cases, detainees were given injections while in custody, after which their health rapidly deteriorated.
One of the most recent cases involved a 16-year-old girl arrested last week. After receiving an injection in prison, she fell into a coma. Medical tests revealed signs of poisoning, but the exact cause remains unknown. She was released only after her family posted a substantial bail and was transferred to the intensive care unit, where she remains. Other cases include a young woman in Isfahan who died after being arrested and released on bail, and a man in Shahinshahr who was given a forced injection upon release and subsequently faced difficulty accessing medical care due to threats from authorities.
