The United States and Iran exchanged military strikes in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday amid heightened tension in the region. Iranian forces launched missiles and drones at three US Navy warships, while US forces carried out retaliatory attacks on multiple Iranian military-related targets, multiple sources reported. A US official told Axios that Washington does not view the confrontation as the beginning of a renewed war. Iran, however, condemned the American strikes as a breach of the existing ceasefire and warned that it could respond with further retaliation. Speaking to ABC News, US President Donald Trump downplayed the confrontation, calling it “just a love tap.” Later, in a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that U.S. forces had destroyed several small Iranian boats after Tehran opened fire on three American destroyers passing through the strategic waterway. He also referred to Iran’s leadership as “lunatics.” According to U.S. Central Command, known as CENTCOM, American forces targeted Iranian missile launch facilities, command infrastructure, and intelligence positions following what it described as “unprovoked” attacks on the U.S. naval vessels. CENTCOM stated that all incoming Iranian missiles and drones were intercepted and that no American ships were damaged. The full scale of the destruction caused by the U.S. retaliatory strikes has not yet been confirmed. Meanwhile, Iran’s military accused the United States of attacking an oil tanker and another vessel entering the Strait of Hormuz. Washington is currently maintaining a blockade against Iranian ships in the region. Although President Trump reportedly scaled back a separate naval operation earlier this week that was intended to secure commercial shipping routes through the strait, the blockade itself remains in effect. The latest confrontation follows Monday’s escalation, when Iran reacted to a now-abandoned U.S. naval initiative by opening fire on American military vessels, commercial ships, and targets linked to the United Arab Emirates
