At least two merchant vessels were struck by gunfire while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz on April 18, Reuters reported, citing three maritime security and security sources. No further details have been released yet about the struck vessels. The incident comes as Iran’s military announced that it would close the Strait of Hormuz again over the continuing row with the US over its naval blockade of Iranian ports. The Iranian military’s operational command, Khatam Al-Anbiya, described the ongoing US blockade as “piracy”, saying “for this reason, control of the strait of Hormuz has reverted to its previous state, and this strategic waterway is under the strict management and control of the armed forces.” Connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, carrying around a fifth of the world’s oil shipments. Any disruption immediately reverberates through energy markets and global trade. The recent tension around the Strait of Hormuz is tied to the ongoing regional stability that followed the US-Israeli coordinated attacks on Iran in late February. On Friday, Iranian officials said the Strait of Hormuz was fully open for commercial vessels, while US President Donald Trump stated that the US blockade “will remain in full force” until Tehran reaches a deal with Washington, including over its nuclear programme.
