Mass protests against the authoritarian Islamic government are escalating in Iran. People are taking to the streets, tearing down national flags, and burning portraits of ayatollahs. In the country’s second-largest city, Mashhad, protesters lowered and tore the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Some police officers are reportedly defecting to the protesters.
Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei plans to flee the country if his security forces fail to suppress protests in the country or defect, The Times reports , citing an intelligence report.
According to The Washington Post , protests, which began amid the economic crisis, have spread across all of Iran’s provinces. Wednesday was the most tense day, with demonstrations taking place in both major cities and rural areas. In the city of Serableh in Ilam Province, crowds burned posters of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and IRGC General Qasem Soleimani, symbols of the repressive system. In Tehran, people marched with pre-revolutionary flags, openly demonstrating their rejection of the Islamic regime and a return to the symbols of pre-1979 Iran.
Protesters claim the city of Karaj has slipped beyond government control. Activists previously reported that Malekshahi and Abdanan had been taken under control. Workers at the country’s largest gas field, South Pars, have also joined the protests, increasing pressure on the regime not only politically but also economically.
According to human rights activists, at least 38 people have died and more than 2,200 have been detained since the protests began. In several regions, authorities have already begun shutting down the internet in an attempt to conceal the scale of the events. So far, Iranian authorities have not launched a total crackdown similar to the suppression of protests following the assassination of Mahsa Amini in 2022. However, experts estimate that the intensification of protests could force the regime to resort to a harsher forceful approach. According to BBC News , the shares remain largely without central leadership, making them less manageable but also more resilient. The Iranian rial has plummeted to 1.4 million to the dollar, sending shock waves through the population. Shops are closing, prices are rising, and sanctions and the regime’s failed policies are only exacerbating the situation. The son of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi stated that the protesters’ demands have not changed for years: the end of the Islamic Republic, the end of the dictatorship of the clergy, and the liberation of the country from the rule of the mullahs.
The Iranian protests are becoming the most serious challenge to the Islamic regime in recent years. The authoritarian system, built on fear and repression, is cracking under street pressure. The longer the authorities ignore reality, the greater the risk of a major explosion across the country.
